Overview AAA Life is looking to hire a highly experience Senior Life Underwriter that analyze, evaluate, and classify risk for life insurance applications in accordance with established underwriting policies. They will handle escalations, complex case underwriting, complaint resolution and active involvement in procedure development are also required.
In this role you will be responsibility for the most complex, highest face amount and most senior applications for life insurance and evaluates within guidelines established. Determine whether to accept, modify or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision. Consult with reinsurers or the medical director on complex cases that require assistance. Work closely with sales agents, customers and physicians’ offices on sensitive cases to gather information on which to base decisions. Have authority to approve cases up to specific standard and substandard limits. May take referral cases from others and assist in the development and training of less experienced underwriters on a regular basis.
Responsibilities - Reviews for acceptance or denial life applications with face amounts up to $5,000,000 fully underwritten to age 85, with a substandard approval authority; and all simplified products all face amounts all ages.
- Interprets MIB codes, and prepares data and reports to the Medical Information Bureau, which involves knowledge of MIB code meanings and procedures. May resolve MIB disputes and corrections or requests for additional information and follow up.
- Verifies that appropriate application signatures and underwriting authorizations have been obtained and are valid. Reviews applications for accuracy and completeness.
- Determines and assures that appropriate information necessary to fulfill underwriting requirements has been requested such as; re-examinations, special exams, medical reports, database research, investigations and laboratory studies
- Reviews all requested additional information, evaluates medical history, complex financial information and approves or denies applications.
- Assists with contract change and reinstatement underwriting.
- Follows all department policies, procedures and processes to maintain or improve quality standards that ensure proper mortality experience. May assist with quality monitoring and audits on occasion.
- Establishes a collaborative relationship with agents/field management, applicants, vendors, other business units, and managers to ensure sales goals are maximized.
- Initiates communications by letter, telephone or personal contact with sales agents, applicants and professional personnel to obtain additional data and communicate decisions.
- Refers cases outside prescribed approval authority to chief underwriters, underwriting consultants or managers for review as needed.
- Consistently meets established productivity and quality expectations for the position.
- Demonstrates commitment to career development by actively participating in AAA sponsored training opportunities and independent industry programs to ensure industry knowledge is current and maintained. Keep appraised of new developments in the field of life underwriting and product development.
- Prepares presentations for underwriters or sales agents that assist with training and development.
- Rates and authorizes applications up to designated amount.
- Performs special projects (research procedural or form changes, reviews files of Sales Representatives, handle complaints or problems etc.) as assigned.
- Provides training and serves as a mentor for less experienced underwriters
- Understands and efficiently utilizes all current systems and technologies.
- Assists with managing workflow to ensure the team is meeting processing standards.
- Recommend changes to procedures or workflow to increase efficiency and reduce processing costs.
- Assumes some of the management duties in the absence of the Life Underwriting Manager.
Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree or medical certification and/or equivalent work experience.
- LOMA 280/281, LOMA 290/ 291, LOMA 301, ALU 101, ALU 201 required.
- ALU 202 and ALU 301, LOMA 320 preferred.
- 7 years’ experience as a life insurance underwriter with an authority limit of up to $5,000,000 all rate classes, all ages
- Significant knowledge and understanding of insurance contracts, medical impairments, financial documents and underwriting tools used.
- Expertise in the legal aspects of risk selection and other factors pertaining to acceptability and assessment of Life insurance applications
- Fluent in the Reinsurance process and good relationships with Reinsurance partners
- Expert understanding of MIB (Medical Information Bureau) rules and procedures
- Detailed knowledge of the sales process, distribution channels and product lines
- Analytical and mathematical abilities required
- EKG interpretation skills preferred
