Community Advocate - Legal will help to move toward our vision of thriving survivors in safe communities.
The Center for Women and Families provides free services to people of all identities who have experienced intimate partner violence and sexual assault. We help our clients and their dependent children become survivors through trauma-informed advocacy. Our goal is to mitigate the impact of trauma by reducing their risk factors and building their resiliency. We serve anyone in Jefferson, Bullitt, Spencer, Shelby, Oldham, Henry and Trimble counties in Kentucky and Floyd and Clark counties in Indiana.
The
Community Advocate - Legal is responsible for providing individuals and families, who have experienced sexual violence and/or intimate partner violence, support by providing assistance navigating the legal system and filing an emergency protective order, accompaniment to court, safety planning, empathetic response to their needs and connect to other community resources. This role collaborates with legal justice professionals to enhance survivor experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities - Provide trauma-informed legal advocacy services to clients affected by intimate partner and/or sexual violence including:
- Assisting clients with filling out and filing Protective Orders
- Collaborate with clients working with Law Enforcement and Prosecutor's office to navigate legal justice system
- Accompany clients to court, filling police report, and during investigation
- Maintain a strong advocate presence at Protective Order court weekly in Floyd and Clark County
- Cultivate & maintain reduced-cost or pro-bono attorney list
- Conduct assessments, intakes and offer follow-up services
- Partner with clients to establish safety plans, strengths, and needs, create a case plan, coordinate transportation, accompaniment to appointments, and offer referrals and resources
- Facilitate support and psychoeducational groups
- Establish and nurture partnerships with other community service providers, Indiana coalitions, law enforcement, judges, attorneys, and other courthouse personnel
- Assist in facilitating professional training to law enforcement and other providers within the legal system
- Coordinate interactions and activities that contribute to safe, stable, nurturing environments
- Collaborate with CWF team on program needs and to create a healthy culture of unconditional positive regard, creativity, and learning
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a related field may be substituted for a degree.
