Get Hooked Seafood is a local seafood purveyor with a mission to provide access to local seafood and education about local fisheries. Get Hooked Seafood has a grant-funded project beginning September 1st, 2024, in partnership with Ventura County Farm-to-School and several public schools, to create and launch a “Sea-to-School” program. This program will serve Ventura County school children (grades K-12) with healthy, local seafood products through cafeteria lunch programs, and develop and implement curriculum about fisheries and seafood. This new part-time Education and Outreach Specialist position will help us fulfill these goals, as well as assist with our general outreach activities, such as tabling at community events and pursuing new community partnerships.

The ideal candidate is passionate about the ocean and food system sustainability and has worked in K-12 educational settings or food service for educational institutions.

Please go to our website, and read about our Community Supported Fishery program.

This is a dynamic job that requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, an empathetic style, and strong decision-making skills. You must be a quick learner, have confidence to make decisions independently, and have excellent follow through. A can-do, problem-solving and positive approach is imperative.

The Education and Outreach Specialist’s tasks will include:

  • Research and adapt existing materials and frameworks for Sea to School programs, in order to develop a set of professional trainings on local seafood preparation for multiple segments of the educational community - administrators, nutritionists, school food service staff, and K-12 students
  • Run a promotional recipe “contest” for kid-friendly, easy-to-prep local seafood recipes with our community of Get Hooked supporters and local chefs
  • Communicate with culinary staff at school district kitchens to understand needs around fresh vs. frozen, preparation steps and limitations, cooking equipment available, training needs and school lunch operations to guide adaptation of recipes for schools
  • Evaluate draft recipes based on cost, allergens, healthfulness, prep time, etc.
  • Gather feedback from students and staff to determine student and staff uptake and support of seafood dishes and curriculum
  • Help to develop an educational curriculum targeting K-12 students about local fisheries and the local seafood being served in their cafeterias, including coordinating classroom visits by local commercial fishers.
  • Participate in storyboarding the creation of new video content to support the curriculum.
  • Help to guide a college intern to support these tasks
  • Conduct other forms of community outreach and partnership efforts by, e.g., speaking about our programs and tabling at community events in Santa Barbara and Ventura.
  • Plan and coordinate team meetings, take notes and send out action items
  • Work with our project partners on logistics and curriculum implementation
  • Make quarterly written reports on progress

Position will remain open until filled. Start date TBD, between September 1 and September 30th.

We anticipate hiring someone with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, and 3-5 years of educational programming experience. You must live in the Santa Barbara/Ventura County region. You can choose to work from home 50% or more of the work week.
