Receives incoming calls for police, fire, EMS and security services, dispatches officers as appropriate, and monitors university alarms. Documents police and security service requests in an electronic records management and dispatch system. Operates a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer, a computer aided mobile dispatch system and a multi-channel radio console.Classification Standard Duties:Performs receptionist duties; responds to questions from walk-in and telephone traffic; controls access to Police Department secured areas; monitors the departments closed circuit video cameras; performs various clerical duties including completing an electronic dispatch log; serves as clearinghouse for University-wide emergency call lists; coordinates departmental paging in the event of a campus emergency; relays radio and telephone messages between police officers and the community; performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned; receives calls concerning crimes, emergencies and other requests for police/fire/EMS assistance; monitors and handles 911 calls for assistance; monitors fire and burglar alarms and alarm systems for all university buildings; operates a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer, a computer aided mobile dispatch (CAD) system and a multi-channel radio console; broadcasts orders to patrol officers in vicinity to investigate complaints or requests when appropriate; relays instructions or questions from remote units; records calls, broadcasts and complaints received; performs data entry on computer.Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, EquivalencyRequired Education:High School diploma or GED certificate.; Required Experience:No previous work experience required.; Equivalency:None; Required Certification/License:Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of radio dispatch regulations, procedures, protocols, and/or equipment; Knowledge of fire and burglar alarm systems reporting.; SKILLS:Records maintenance skills; skill in the use of computers and ability to use NCIC identification and Computer Aided Dispatch software; Computer data entry skills; clerical, word processing, and/or office skills; receptionist skills.; ABILITIES:Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations; ability to effectively operate a multi-channel radio console; ability to perform multiple tasks and solve problems in a technical setting.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe job duties and responsibilities of our Emergency Dispatcher Position include the following: Answering calls for service (911 emergencies and non-emergency assistance) and radio dispatching law enforcement, fire services, and emergency medical services agencies primarily on NMSU campus; coordination of emergency resources/services during regional critical incidents; sensitive data entry for the regional Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD), the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and various other databases; monitoring of campus wide video cameras; monitoring of various campus wide alarm systems (security/intrusion, fire, and panic/duress alarms); responsible for our emergency notification system messaging (CLERY Compliance); coordinates messages for department personnel from community members; and is the primary receptionist/face of the department for community members walking into the lobby area of the department with questions/needing any public safety assistance.Preferred QualificationsN/ASpecial Requirements of the PositionDepartment Contact:kennae@nmsu.eduContingent Upon Funding: Not ApplicableBargaining Unit Eligibility: This is a bargaining unit position with American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME).Standard Work Schedule: Shift: Other ShiftIf Not a Standard Work Schedule: Public Safety - 24/7 Shift CoverageWorking Conditions and Physical EffortEnvironment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.Physical Effort: Light physical effort.
