Description

Library Assistant

Fort Worth Country Day seeks an enthusiastic professional for the role of Library Assistant to begin August of 2024. The Library Assistant works closely with the librarians to support the JK-12 library program. The Fort Worth Country Day library program serves all students from Junior Kindergarten - Grade 12. The library is open 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Thursday and 7:30 AM - 4 PM on Friday, and is staffed by three professional librarians and the library assistant. A robust parent volunteer program helps with shelving, processing books and periodicals, displays, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree and some experience working in a public or school library.

The Library Assistant will demonstrate solid competencies, such as:

DUTIES

Collection maintenance
  • Assists with setup and maintenance of automated catalog and circulation systems
  • Assists in the selection and processing of new materials to maintain a balanced, current collection of print and digital materials
  • Downloads and imports new catalog data
  • Oversees the processing of all library materials (covers, laminate, spine reinforcements, property/date stamps, barcodes, and spine and genre labels)
  • Oversees the processing of new periodicals (check in, stamp, labels, and displays)
  • Helps conduct library inventory and weeding of obsolete and worn materials


Assists with Circulation, Reserve and Overdue Services, including:
  • Implements all aspects of library circulation and reserve services for students, faculty and staff
  • Oversees all overdue notices, lost book notices and all necessary billing
  • Instructs library users in use of library system, aids in finding information and materials
  • Assists in preparing reserve collections for curriculum projects
  • Maintains the library open hours as assigned

Book Displays, Decorations, Library Programs
  • Assists with developing and implementing displays and decorations in the Lower School and Moncrief Libraries
  • Manages all aspects of the Lower School Birthday Book Club program as well as memorial and honor donations
  • Assists with the visiting author program and annual book fair


Library Classes and Student Assistance
  • Assists with library classes and class setups as needed
  • Provides directional and reference assistance for students
Volunteers
  • Helps train and supervise volunteers to satisfactorily perform library tasks: circulation procedures, periodicals processing, book processing, shelving, shelf reading and other tasks


Clerical Support
  • Assists with purchasing of library materials and supplies as directed/approved by the librarians
  • Oversees the checking in of materials (books, supplies, etc.) shipments
  • Reconciles the library credit card statement on a monthly basis


Other
  • May attend divisional faculty meetings as a representative of the library
  • Performs other duties as assigned by head librarian and/or division director


Physical Demands
  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing and stooping
  • Bending, twisting and reaching
  • Talking and hearing; use of the telephone
  • Lifting and carrying, typically 20 pounds or less
  • Word processing, writing, filing, sorting, shelving and book processing
  • Pushing and pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds on wheels
  • Able to walk between the Lower School library and the Moncrief library multiple times each day


Expected Work Hours

The Library Assistant is a non-exempt position and is scheduled to work 40 hours per week during school weeks. This position typically follows the school calendar for faculty. In addition, the library staff also works on a rotating basis every Wednesday during the summer months. The Library Assistant enjoys all faculty holidays off during the school year.
