Job Description

The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of his/her teaching assignment and will have demonstrated success in teaching and/or working with pre-primary and/or elementary aged students. The candidate should also possess the skills necessary to inspire learning and enhance the overall educational experience by fostering students’ academic, ethical, social, and emotional development in accordance with the Riverside Presbyterian Day School mission and philosophy.

Under the immediate supervision of the Library Media Specialist, the Library Assistant performs a variety of tasks in support of the library media instructional program.  Such tasks include the receipt and processing of library materials, providing assistance to teachers in production of classroom instructional materials, circulation of library materials, general clerical tasks, shelving materials, helping library users locate materials, and maintaining a clean, orderly and welcoming environment.  

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in creating an inviting, inclusive environment where library patrons feel welcomed and valued.
  • Assist in instructing students in behavior needed to maintain a safe, welcoming library environment and monitoring behavior to sustain the environment;
  • Promote the library media program to prospective RPDS families during Admissions tours;
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all members of the RPDS community;
  • Support the circulation and use policies of the library media program and, when needed, instruct others in same; 
  • Assist the librarian in the production of instructional materials for library classes; 
  • Track library supplies in order to meet current and future needs;
  • Use instructional electronic equipment including projectors, television/display, document camera, computer, and student iPads;
  • Assist teachers and students in selecting and locating materials in support of the instructional program and for pleasure reading;
  • Provide direction and assistance to library parent volunteers and Project LEADS library helpers;
  • Process new books by entering data into an automated library management system. 
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer with library management software, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, copier, classroom materials production equipment, book processing equipment;
  • Receive, process and prepare books for shelving; 
  • Shelve library materials and maintain shelves in order;
  • General clerical filing;
  • Circulation of library materials to patrons;
  • Maintenance of patron records in library management system
  • Prepare and distribute overdue material notices to staff and students;
  • Repair and mend damaged books and other instructional materials;
  • Inventory library books and materials;
  • Prepare displays and bulletin boards to enhance the visual appearance of the library. 
  • Prepare and send Birthday Book letter to parents each month, prepare purchased Birthday Books for students and maintain records of purchases and book selections;
  • Assist in the planning and execution of reading promotions throughout the school year;  
  • Assists with planning, organizing, promoting and conducting book fairs;
  • Assists with Author-in-Residence program; 
  • Fulfill assigned student supervision duties, such as before and/or after school.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree

  • Ability to interpret and apply verbal/written instructions; 
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks;  
  • Ability to learn and apply established procedures related to teaching and library program administration;
  • Ability to perform routine recordkeeping, clerical duties, and maintain records in electronic format.
  • Ability to operate a variety of standard school/office equipment and machines.  
  • Ability to learn computer software utilized in the library.  
  • Ability to meet predetermined deadlines.  
  • Ability to plan and organize work.  
  • Ability to establish positive relationships and work cooperatively with employees, students, and the RPDS community.  
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods. 
  • Ability to respond to challenging situations with tact, patience and courtesy;
  • Ability to redirect student behavior to maintain the educational environment and safety of students; 
  • Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. 
  • Ability to assist students in locating and using reference and pleasure reading materials.
