Description A Police Dispatcher Trainee/Police Dispatcher I answers multiple telephone lines, performs extensive typing/transcribing, communicates effectively with persons requesting emergency and non-emergency police assistance, clearly and accurately relays information via radio dispatch, transfers calls appropriately and maintains logs and records of communication activities.
New hires without the state-mandated 9-1-1 dispatcher certification begin their employment as Police Dispatcher Trainees and are promoted to Police Dispatcher I after receiving the certification and serving a one-year probation.
Duties and Responsibilities - Monitors telephones and radios in the dispatch center, answers all incoming calls and ascertains nature of call, gathers all necessary information to transmit or relay.
- Dispatches police and other emergency response vehicles; broadcasts nature, location and time of incident; calls in specialized or reserve units at the direction of a supervisor; relays information as required.
- Maintains log on radio and telephone communications, location of personnel and equipment; in the event of an emergency situation, maintains on-going contact with the responding personnel and keeps them informed of all incoming pertinent information; keeps track of various information such as traffic lights out and streets closed and keeps emergency personnel informed.
- Maintains dispatch center work area and equipment in clean and working condition.
- Operates radios as needed and assists in radio communications; operates base radio as required.
- Operates office machines as required.
- Maintains dispatch documents and records; prepares case reports; enters records into the FCIC/NCIC computer as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications - High school graduate/GED
- One year of general work experience
- Valid Florida driver's license
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks in a high pressure environment
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be computer literate
- Must type 35 wpm
OTHER:
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
- This position requires extensive shift work (nights, holidays, and weekends) and overtime.

This position is covered under the City of Miami Springs General Pension Plan, which requires a mandatory pre-tax contribution which is 5.88% for fiscal year 2023-24.
