High School Biology Teacher Position Purpose - Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the High School Biology Teacher will develop students' understanding of biological concepts and principles, fostering skills in scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving. This role involves promoting an appreciation for the complexity of living organisms and their interactions with the environment.
Essential Functions - Develops and administers a Biology curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Creates lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into engaging learning experiences that challenge students and maximize instructional time.
- Teaches biological concepts, including cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Promotes students' understanding of scientific methods, laboratory techniques, and the application of biological knowledge in real-world contexts.
- Encourages critical thinking about biological issues, environmental sustainability, and the impact of scientific advancements on society.
- Develops students' research skills, analytical abilities, and capacity to conduct experiments and present findings.
- Promotes students' ability to evaluate scientific information critically and understand its implications for health and the environment.
- Conducts ongoing assessments of student learning and progress, adapting instructional methods to meet individual student needs, including those with special needs.
- Continuously acquires professional knowledge and stays updated on current developments in biology education by attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings.
- Organizes and maintains accurate records of student performance, grading, and attendance in compliance with district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures that student conduct aligns with school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining a conducive learning environment.
- Coordinates with other professional staff, participates in faculty meetings and committees, and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional materials and resources, maintaining inventory records.
Additional Duties - Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment - Utilizes standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, and telephones.
Travel Requirements - Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities - Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Expertise in biological sciences and laboratory safety.
- Understanding of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
- Familiarity with applicable federal and state education laws and regulations.
- Proficiency with computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
- Strong communication skills for engaging with students and parents.
- Commitment to self-evaluation and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the school community.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards - Works in standard office and school building environments.
Qualifications Profile Certification/License: - Connecticut State Certification as a Biology Teacher.
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the ability to provide own transportation.
Education: - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education or a related discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
- Master's Degree preferred.
Experience: - Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
