Coordinates and assures nutrition and health education for all participants and monitors all nutrition education materials. Provides in-depth individual nutrition counseling and care plans as assigned. Provides nutrition and health assessment, education, referral and care coordination services providing accurate documentation and follow up of referrals made. Serves as an adjunct to health care providing nutrition services to Maternal and Child/Adolescent Health (MCAH) programs. Knowledge of and Ability to Normal and therapeutic nutrition Current nutrition trends Maternal health, infant, child, and adolescent growth and development Child/infant immunization schedule Community resources and partnership building OSHA regulations regarding Universal Precautions procedure English language to include grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and vocabulary skills Ability to: Apply knowledge of scientific principles to specific nutritional problems Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner Learn, apply, and articulate departmental policies and procedures Apply state or federal standards as they relate to programs Develop, read, comprehend, and analyze rules, reports, and related technical and administrative data associated with WIC and other national nutrition programs Perform statistical computations Maintain confidentiality and security of information as appropriate Provide customer service that is courteous and responsive Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, health professionals, agencies, students, patients, and members of the public Communicate effectively with persons representing from widely divergent backgrounds, interests, points of view with possible language/cultural barriers Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias Motivate a culturally diverse population to adopt healthy and nutritional eating habits Organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities Collect and record data, keep accurate records Be detail-oriented when working with documents and information Use a computer for the purposes of data entry, spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, email and Internet Operate common office equipment such as calculators, fax and postage machines, photocopiers, and multi-line telephones Organize and present factual information and ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to groups and individuals in formal and informal situations Follow oral and written instructions Handle moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position Have clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communication Have sufficient vision which permits light to moderate production and review of a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hardcopy forms Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull up to 35 pounds. Sit, stand, bend, kneel, squat, twist, and climb, reach and use a step stool as needed Have suffic ent personal mobility to complete work at various facilities Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime as needed Minimum Education, Training and Experience and Special Requirements Bachelors degree in nutrition, dietetics, food systems management, health-related field, public health with an emphasis in nutrition or closely related field AND completion of an internship approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Special requirements: Must be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian as delineated by the Commission of Dietetic Registration and be licensed in the State of Iowa OR possess the ability to sit for the licensing exam within one month of hire. Must complete the continuing education requirements for ongoing maintenance of both registration and licensure. Valid drivers license and insurable under county liability coverage. May also require use of personal vehicle, or equivalent transportation, for official business. Must pass background check. Specific Duties to be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Coordinates and assures nutrition education to participants. Counsels WIC clients using participant-centered counseling techniques. Collaborates with clinical dietitians, physicians, social workers, nurses, and pharmacy care coordinators to ensure authorization and availability of medical nutrition foods and formulas for high-risk infants, children, and pregnant women. Analyzes and evaluates health and nutrition risks based on program criteria. Provides health and nutrition screenings, care coordination, and tracking for program participants. Provides WIC certification of high-risk clients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Ensures distribution of electric breast pumps to WIC mothers and assigns/communicates with peer breastfeeding counselors when needed. Obtains measurements of height, length, and weight and conducts bloodwork for hemoglobin and lead poisoning analysis. Scores depression screenings and reviews immunization records to make appropriate referrals as needed. Promotes development screening for young children and provides screening tool. Provides nutrition services for MCAH, and other department programs as needed. Develops and facilitates WIC group parent sessions on client centered wellness, nutrition, parenting and food topics. Provides nutrition education to staff including in-service meetings. Assists with referral of WIC and MCAH participants to other sources of health care and community services. Documents follow-up on referrals made. Assists with grant and report writing, including for the WIC grant action plans. Provides program and nutrition information to interested professionals, outside agencies, organizations, and individuals. Sets up WIC clinic equipment and computers at satellite sites as needed. Stocks, maintains and disinfects lab area. Serves as a mandatory reporter to the Department of Human Services. Assists in the development of both graduate and undergraduate students completing internships and practicum experiences at Johnson County Public Health.
