Summary Whatcom County Health & Community Services is recruiting for the position of
Public Health Nurse in the
Communicable Disease and Epidemiology Division. Public Health Nurses represent WCHCS as a health resource person in the community and interpret public health programs and policies to individuals, families, community groups, schools, physicians and other collateral community agencies and service providers.
This critical position is part of a team that provides indispensable services to our community. Initial assignment will be in the
Immunizations Program working with the community to address low immunization rates; and administering vaccine to priority populations. This role also includes providing education and consultation to health care providers, and the general public, regarding vaccine preventable diseases.
Other programs within the Communicable Disease and Epidemiology division:
- Adult Health: HIV and Hepatitis C prevention, Syringe Services Program - Conducts health promotion and harm reduction activities to decrease high risk behaviors and provides referrals to services for persons with HIV and other health conditions.
- Tuberculosis Program: Provides screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of TB.
- Communicable Disease: Provides disease surveillance and investigation for communicable disease and notifiable conditions in accordance with local, state, and federal mandates and guidelines
- Infection Prevention: communicable disease prevention in long-term care facilities and congregate settings
- Emergency Preparedness - Planning for emergency public health events in Whatcom County. Responding to events as they occur.

Supervisor : Public Health Nurse Supervisor
Qualifications - Current, valid Washington State license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
- College degree in Nursing. Rate of pay depends on level of degree.
- Public health experience or specific internship or practicum in public health desired
- Spanish language fluency desired
Pay scale with Associate's degree in Nursing, with ability to obtain BSN within 2 years of hire: $32.39 - $42.18 per hour
Pay scale with Bachelor's degree in Nursing, or current enrollment in BSN program with graduation within 6 months of hire: $37.54 - $52.66 per hour
Pay scale with Masters degree in Nursing, or MPH: $39.22 - $54.51 per hour
This position receives
annual pay increases to the next step in the associated
salary range subject to satisfactory performance,
in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
We are required by State Law to list the full salary range. As a public entity and in a union-covered position, we are required to make pay decisions based on experience, qualifications, and equity with other employees. Hiring rate typically is limited to entry to mid of the posted salary range, subject to required approvals.
At its sole discretion, Whatcom County may consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of specifically required qualifications contained herein.
